Myogenic potential signals can be captured and analysed to quantitively assess motor skill

Key Word : myogenic potential signal, muscle synergy, robot system, sports guidance, rehabilitation

Technology Overview:

When humans make a voluntary motion, electrical signals are propagated from the center to the periphery. With this technology, the motor commands originated centrally are captured as myogenic potential signals, and by analyzing the muscle coordination (muscle synergy) of various parts of the body during motion, the motor skill of the user is quantitatively evaluated based on their activity balance.
In addition, by applying the proposed “Muscle synergy extraction/prediction technology” to a human-machine interface, robot system teaching and supporting body movement for the improvement of motor skill can be achieved.

Potential Applications / Potential Markets:

Osaka University would like to achieve practical use of this technology by collaborating with sports and rehabilitation companies interested in the evaluation of muscle activity balance of the body, particularly in the following four fields.
(1) Development of a motor function support device
(2) Quantitative evaluation of motor skill
(3) Quantitative evaluation of the motor function support effect of a commercial/development device (sporting goods and braces)
(4) Establishment of a new sports guidance and rehabilitation technique
