Background / Context / Abstract:

Manufacturers of optical fibers state that the nonlinear parameters of released products are constant in their longitudinal direction. In contrast, the parameters exhibit an actual longitudinal change. Moreover, nonlinear parameters of photonic crystal fibers, for example, are difficult to determine exactly.

Technology Overview:

This technique can be used to determine nonlinear parameters of optical fibers by passing precisely profiled light pulses through them as probe light. Its spectrum is determined with a spectrometer and the spectrum is analyzed.

Benefits:

· The operation is very easy.
· Nonlinear parameters can be determined within several seconds.
· The longitudinal length is divided into several sections and the nonlinear parameters for each section is determined and analyzed.

· This technique can be utilized for quality assurance before shipment by the manufacturers of optical fibers.
